The European Commission has announced a €60 million humanitarian aid package for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2025. This initiative aims to address the urgent needs of communities displaced or affected by ongoing conflict and recent epidemics, particularly in the country’s eastern regions. In a statement issued on January 28, the Commission highlighted the growing humanitarian crisis in and around Goma, where escalating violence has led to significant displacement.

The European Union (EU) reaffirmed its commitment to providing emergency assistance, emphasizing the importance of responding swiftly to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations. The €60 million funding will focus on critical support, including food security, healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and shelter for those displaced by conflict. This aid package also seeks to mitigate the effects of recent epidemics that have further strained the region’s fragile healthcare systems.

Eastern DRC has long been plagued by instability, driven by armed group activities and inter-communal violence. The humanitarian situation has worsened in recent months, with thousands of families forced to flee their homes, many seeking refuge in makeshift camps near Goma. The EU’s announcement follows reports from international agencies warning of deteriorating living conditions and increasing malnutrition rates among displaced populations.

The EU remains a key donor in addressing humanitarian needs in the DRC, having provided substantial aid in past years to assist those affected by chronic crises. The European Commission underscored that this latest funding is part of broader efforts to ensure coordinated international support for the DRC’s most vulnerable communities. In addition to direct aid, the EU called for renewed international collaboration to tackle the root causes of the crisis.

The statement emphasized the importance of supporting long-term stability and development alongside immediate humanitarian interventions. This announcement underscores the EU’s ongoing role in global humanitarian efforts, particularly in regions facing protracted crises. It also reflects the bloc’s strategic focus on addressing the compounded challenges of conflict, displacement, and public health emergencies. – By EuroWire News Desk.
