The Nobel committee highlighted her unique approach to addressing complex emotional and historical issues in a lyrical and resonant style. The award comes with a cash prize of SEK11 million (approximately US$1.1 million). The Swedish Academy emphasized the significance of Han’s works in portraying the vulnerability of human life, particularly through the lens of South Korea’s troubled history. Born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea, Han Kang has published several novels, essays, and poetry collections. Her writing often centers on themes of violence, pain, and memory, reflecting her nation’s turbulent past and the impact of collective trauma on individuals.
